Dear Joseph,
You are obviously an intelligent person, but your criticism of Pema Chodron is silly. I thought at first that you were just making the mistake of taking literally some of the Buddhist teaching tales, which are meant to be read metaphorically (such as being cut into pieces by knives and feeling no pain) but it goes beyond that. You are inside a defensive paradigm that creates "strawmen" and "strawwomen" to argue against, putting forth ideas never meant or expressed by them just so that you can dismiss them. It's cheap and seems to spring from your need to adhere so tightly to your own set of beliefs ("special relationships with people who are spiritually important vs. everyone else," etc.) You must know that these beliefs of yours, which you stand on to "critique" others are neither defensible logically nor spiritually in the largest sense of paradigm unfolding. What feels good to you personally or brings you personal happiness, or contentment, or synchronicity, is only the smallest part of spiritual life. Your orientation towards attacking others and holding your own beliefs as the standard is pretty un-spiritual. I hope you aren't responsible for swaying vulnerable persons with your questionable ideas.

Joseph,
Is your comment at the end about your life supposed to be ironic? Are you aware Eckhart tolle and Jesus are speaking of a deeper paradigm then good and evil? You can not grasp their concepts through pure intellectual reasoning. It's deeper feeling of connection. Through that connection our geeks have solved many of the worlds problems. sorry my comments aren't fully developed as I'm writing this rather quickly. I'd be happy to expand if your interested.

Every book I read gives me a better understanding of and connection to God.Reading about your difficulties and the way you thought them through was amazing.I wonder if there is any such thing as the one true reality that explains everything that needs to be explained? If we knew this, what next?

Found this site when I looked for well-written critiques of Eckart Tolle. The usual circuitous route of connections discovered while searching for something else on-line. Sometimes, that seeming randomness becomes synchronicity.

I, too, have had experiences of "messages." As a kid, they were of a kind of nature mysticism. I'm from the Pacific NW, where the natural world literally looms large. Volcanoes, huge trees, saltwater ecosystems. It's also where the dominant religion is none at all (63%) Therefore I did not have to overcome the burden of psychological pain religious instruction may inflict. But that also means I did not have much of a context for understanding those "messages."

It has taken me decades to acquire enough experience, knowledge, depth, and trust in intuition. I had to learn discernment. Like separating the subtle from the sentimental. Or seeing the core truth of religious tradition without being distracted by its spectacle. And most difficult, getting past the desire to linger in that initial rush of light and love. Eventually, the requirement is to cross the abyss. Persisting despite what seems like an "eternal now" of darkness and stasis. Surviving what feels like an abandonment by all sources of spiritual comfort or guidance. That's the work of taking up one's own cross...

I have read many books on this subject and I feel as though I belong here with other really good people with who I already feel a real connection.I question myself consistently if what I am experiencing is mental, emotional, or spiritual. This can be time consuming and confusing but then I have that ah-ha moment when my perspective on life changes and everything looks somehow just a little bit different.Every time this happens I feel a growing connectedness to everything.I am sure there are many of you having very simular experiences.Yon know all these experiences we are having is truly where the richness of life begins.

You know we all have are own story and I believe in the flow.I'm convinced in order to be fully aware and in touch with the flow you have to make peace with yourself first. If we are not able to cleanse ourselves of the typical emotional damage that has touched our lives;guilt, shame, etc. This will cause serious distractions to our connections with the flow.
